Dr. Robert Eppley - President of the California Sports and Orthopaedic Institute
With more than two decades of relevant experience, Robert Eppley, M.D., serves as President of the California Sports and Orthopaedic Institute based in Berkeley, California. His practice focuses on the shoulder and knee and treats arthritis and orthopaedic injuries of all kinds.
Eppley has been named among the “Best Doctors in America” for orthopaedic surgery in the East Bay Medical Guide, among several other peer and patient-nominated honors. His range of expertise includes arthroscopic and open surgeries such as Bankart repairs, osteochondral grafts, meniscus repairs, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. He additionally has experience in rotator cuff tendon repairs, partial and total replacement of the shoulder and knee, and reverse shoulder replacement.
Over the length of his career, Dr. Eppley has performed more than 10,000 procedures on shoulders and knees and has lectured or instructed at surgical teaching venues across the country. He notably participated as Master Surgeon with the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Illinois.
Maintaining a longstanding affiliation with the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Robert Eppley is the lead orthopaedic surgeon with the school’s athletic teams. In this capacity, he provides sideline coverage of the California Golden Bears football team, traveling with the team to away games. He also serves as the Student Health Service Chief of Orthopaedics, and has a subspecialty certification in sports medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Obtaining his M.D. with honors at Ohio’s Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Robert Eppley undertook residency and fellowship work at Case as well as Harvard University and Tufts University. He completed his medical training by studying with the Southern California Orthopedic Institute Fellowship Program in Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy and Reconstructive Surgery and as an Otto E. Aufranc Fellow in Adult Reconstructive Surgery with Boston’s New England Baptist Hospital.
A high school and college athlete, Dr. Eppley enjoys hiking, swimming, and spending time with his family when not engaged in his medical responsibilities.
